​The VMS Gifted Academy 
is well known in the area 
as an exceptional learning experience that encourages students to excel, yet maintain their individuality. 



​Students qualify using the Sarasota County Schools Gifted Program Guidelines and attend full-time or are enrolled in individual subjects.
  • Why select the VMS Gifted Academy?
The students in the VMS Gifted Academy excel! VMS Gifted is led by a team of teachers, two of which are Nationally Board Certified. Each year, the students win local and state speech, essay, science fair and geography competitions. VMS Gifted students regularly earn awards in the Patriot’s Penn essay contest. Recently, the 1st place winner was a VMS Gifted Academy student.  In addition, a recent winner of the local 8th grade division of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Annual Essay Contest, was a member of the Gifted Academy team andwent on to win at the state level.

Probably the greatest strength in the VMS Gifted Academy is the communication between the VMS staff, the students and their families. The teachers work around each other’s major projects so students are not overwhelmed and have time for extracurricular activities and family fun.

  • What other advantages can my child gain in VMS’s Gifted Academy?
At VMS, if your child successfully completes Spanish, Biology 1 and/or advanced math, he or she earns high school credits! 

  • How does my child enroll in the VMS Gifted Academy?
Students qualify using the Sarasota County Schools Gifted Program Guidelines. The ESE Liaison at your child’s current school will assist you in determining if your child meets the eligibility requirements. VMS Gifted students attend the full-time Gifted Academy or are enrolled part-time in individual academic courses. 

  • What is a “Community of Caring” school?
This is a character education curriculum that involves promoting positive forms of behavior. VMS is committed to practicing and encouraging the core values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Family. VMS’s character education curriculum is taught weekly to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of the students.

  • What other opportunities are available to VMS Gifted students?
VMS Gifted students are active in band, chorus, art, general music, guitar, drama, physical education, health, Spanish, TV production, technology, keyboarding, Sport F.I.T. (Fitness Intensive Training), intramurals and interscholastic sports. The VMS principal and staff seek input from parents and students through surveys and informal focus groups. Contact
